It was founded by the late Robert Keliʻihoʻomalu Sr., a Hawaiian-Filipino farmer, soldier, and sovereignty advocate who opened his family’s land to the community with a vision of aloha, cultural renewal, and world peace. Here, local ʻohana (family) govern through Hawaiian values rather than state bureaucracy, guided by the principle of aloha ʻāina, a love and respect for the land itself. Mana House is a fully powered off-grid home, robust solar panels charged by the sun with a back up system and UV-Ray triple-filtered water is supplied by the rain and stored in abundance. Everything runs smoothly and automatically, and the lights, fans, hot water, and Wi-Fi all work just like a regular home. In fact we fair better when the power goes out in town. We just ask that guests use energy and water mindfully, as the island teaches us to live in rhythm with nature. You’re surrounded by lush jungle and ocean air, which means you may share the space with local geckos or the occasional visiting bug. The wraparound lanai and all living areas are fully screened to keep the breezes flowing while keeping the jungle at a comfortable distance. At night, you’ll hear the coqui frogs singing. It’s all part of the Big Island experience: wild, alive, and connected to the land. This part of the island is lush and green for a reason. You can expect passing showers, sunshine, and rainbows, often all in the same day. Your hosts are easygoing and always up for a laugh. With no nearby neighbors, you’re free to stay up late or rise with the sun, play music and games, and make the space your own. Guest Access
Guests have full private access to the entire upstairs home, including the kitchen, living area, wraparound lanai, and all bedrooms and bathrooms. The space has its own private entrance and onsite parking in the driveway. You’ll also have access to the rest of the property — the yard, gardens, jungle paths, and laundry area — which are shared with your hosts. We live downstairs in a separate home with our own entrance. We’re nearby if you’d like a quick tour, local tips, or to talk story, but we’re just as happy to give you complete privacy to relax and enjoy the space your way. Check-in is easy and flexible. You’ll want a car to explore the East Side at your own pace. The Red Road curves through jungle and along the sea, with ocean cliffs on one side and lush rainforest on the other. It’s one of the most scenic stretches on the island. There’s free parking at the house, and everything you need is within easy reach. Yoga, massage, and snacks are just minutes away, and a small country store nearby offers basic groceries and essentials. For restaurants and larger grocery stores, Pāhoa town is about a 25-minute drive. You can book through traditional car rental companies at the airport, however many guests prefer using Turo for its flexibility, convenience, and local options. Think of it as the Airbnb of car rentals, where you book directly from local hosts, often with better rates and personal service. Just make sure your Turo host offers pickup and drop-off for your airport. It’s an especially great option for those arriving late, since most rental counters close around 10 p.m. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are very limited in this area and may not be available at all, so having your own car is definitely the way to go. Pro tip: When renting a Jeep or 4x4 on Turo, some hosts allow light off-roading while others require you to stay on paved roads.
